In today’s article, we talk about the road to recovery after COVID-19. We asked our India Founder & Public Healthcare Professional, Mallika Parekh to share her thoughts on how to get back into your fitness regime.
The second wave of the pandemic has hit our country pretty badly, worse so than the first time around. It feels like everyone we know has had to battle this virus at some point or the other. Needless to say, combating this virus takes up all the strength and fight in you, which is why it’s so important to build up your resistance and strength through exercise.
Whether you’re an athlete or active individual who has recovered from COVID-19, you probably can’t wait to get back on the field or resume your exercise routine, and in the case of Physiquers, hitting the barre! Don’t worry we have an action plan to get you back into action! Here are a few tips to reintroduce exercise back into your life by Mallika Parekh.
How To Restart Your Fitness Regime:
1. Get Your Doctor’s Approval
The first step to restarting your fitness routine is to make sure you are cleared to exercise by your doctor. This is extremely important because overexerting yourself or not giving your body enough time to heal will only lead to further damage.
2. Slow And Steady Wins The Race
While you may have got your doctors seal of approval to exercise it doesn’t give you the freedom to get back into the intense fitness routine you did before your bout with COVID-19. Start slow with a walk, light jogging or yoga and gradually increase the intensity. Remember resistance training is a big NO!
3. Say Yes To Low-intensity Exercises
The best way to know if you aren’t overdoing it is to make sure you can say a sentence at all times. In other words, you shouldn’t run out of breath while exercising, if you do, you need to stop and take a break. Try brisk walking, cycling and our recovery class.
4. Check Your Vitals During The Workout
It’s crucial that you always check your pulse before, during and after the workout. Stop if you feel breathless or faint. Pushing yourself will only lead to back into illness.
5. Drink Plenty Of Fluids
The golden rule for a healthy body is to stay hydrated. We cannot stress how important it is to keep yourself hydrated at all times. Ensure you drink 7 cups of water every day, eat plenty of water-rich foods like cucumber, watermelon, apples, lettuce and broth.
6. Listen To Your Body
Last but definitely not least, pay attention to what your body is trying to tell you. Look out for red flags. If something feels off, like shortness of breath, fatigue and other warning signs, it’s better to visit your doctor for the best course of action.
