It was 2005 and Jennifer Vaughan Maanavi, an Ivy League Wall Street professional, was walking home on a familiar Manhattan street when she discovered her second calling. She would reinvent the fitness industry. It was on that day that Jennifer’s favorite fitness studio announced that it was closing. It was The Lotte Berk Method, the highly lauded fitness studio named for its venerable ballet dancer creator. The Lotte Berk studio was closing its doors, leaving Jennifer and legions of passionate Lotte Berk followers in its empty wake. To Jennifer, the need for a replacement studio was an opportunity. One that she wasted no time pursuing. She immediately joined forces with Tanya Becker, one of the leading Lotte Berk instructors in the country, and together, they created Physique 57. An innovative and modern take on the best of The Lotte Berk Method. The demand was there. And so was the business! In February 2006, Physique 57 debuted at 24 W. 57th Street in New York City to ecstatic clients and long waitlists. From there, it was the Hamptons, more studios in NYC, LA, Dubai, Bangkok, and Mumbai.

Before moving from NYC to Mumbai and marrying in 2015, Mallika Tarkas Parekh lamented that if she could pack only one thing in her suitcase, it would be Physique 57. A health care professional with a double Masters in Medical Science and Public Health, Parekh spent her career studying and researching medical science and hence understands the importance of staying fit and healthy to prevent illness in later life.
Growing up, Parekh spent most of her time playing tennis and other sports, resulting in numerous injuries and years of physical therapy. Later in her twenties, Parekh struggled to find an exercise that she enjoyed, but didn’t hurt. That is, until she was introduced by a friend to Physique 57. Finally, the pain was no longer in her bones and joints, but in her muscles, which we’re building and sculpting from Physique 57’s groundbreaking fitness method.
Once in India, through her research, Parekh realized the lack of emphasis on bone and muscle health in Indian culture and medicine which was a disconcerting discovery given that Indians have a lower bone density than most other populations worldwide. She knew then, that Physique 57’s revolutionary fitness method would have a place in India, beginning in Mumbai.
Parekh is thrilled to have brought this proven-effective workout program to her adopted city while continuing her lifelong commitment to improving access to preventative and quality health care.
